Sunflower is hospitalized at UC Davis with pneumonia, a painful lump in her jaw, and congenital skeletal deformities. Your donation will cover her transport, hospitalization, and care costs!

It has been a little over two months since our beloved cow, Magnolia, passed away from lymphoma. She lived almost ten years here and died surrounded by so much love from her human and bovine friends. So many people like you celebrated Magnolia’s memory, donating to install larger gates for emergency access. We even recently planted an 8’ magnolia tree in her honor. 🌳♥️ I can think of no better way to honor Magnolia’s kindness than saving the life of a calf just like her, can you?

You might be wondering how this came to be. It started when a southern California family decided to get “into homesteading”. Looking to add a cow to their farm, they contacted a dairy and offered to trade two of their goats for one of their older, weaned female calves. The dairy agreed to the trade. Early one morning, the family received a call to “come pick up their calf.” And instead of a 4-mos-old calf, they were given a newborn. Only a day old.

The family took her home but, as you can imagine, they were unprepared to care for such a vulnerable, young animal. After three weeks, the calf became quite ill and the family reached out for help. A small sanctuary, Reject Ranch, offered emergency placement, with another reaching out to Animal Place. With limited resources, the sanctuary needed help. It was an honor to say yes to Sunflower. Reject Ranch stabilized Sunflower, putting her on antibiotics and fever reducers. After a couple of days, she was transported from Yucaipa to UC Davis in a climate controlled van.

Today, Sunflower is hospitalized at UC Davis. She has a lung infection, a painful lump around her jaw, and diarrhea. It appears she was born with a skeletal deformity affecting her tail and the leg bones on one side of her body. She will be getting x-rayed to determine the extend of her infection. A biopsy has been taken to evaluate the lump. And fecals will help determine if she has parasites or a bacterial infection. We can only save animals like Sunflower with your support.
