With you, there is hope

Sprite is lucky to be alive. And that’s truly heartbreaking, because Sprite has only been on this planet for 7 weeks.

Earlier this month, Sprite huddled in a crate, surrounded by the screams of her flockmates. She had no water or food, no protection from the elements. Can you imagine how terrified she must have been?

Why was Sprite there?  Prior to Yom Kippur, the Jewish holiday of atonement, Kaporos takes place. Chickens or coins are swung around a participant’s head while a prayer is spoken. While most use coins, a small community continues to use chickens. The largest gathering occurs in New York, where 50,000 chickens are confined, sometimes days without food and water, in crates before being violently handled and killed.

And that is what would have happened to Sprite if compassionate advocates hadn’t negotiated her release. Hundreds of birds were saved and we welcomed 15 to Animal Place.
